How to Connect with God (He Seems So Far Away)

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Do you feel like you keep getting the busy signal when you try and connect with the Lord?

Are you asking the question, “where are you, God?”

Have you experienced the all alone feeling, where nobody ‘gets’ you? Are the challenges you face causing you to feel like you are on your own?

Who can you turn to when there doesn’t seem to be anyone you can count on to just listen — no fixing required. Who can help when you want to fade away or disengage because no one seems to notice?

Enter the Lord, but sometimes … He seems so far away.

Why does God seem so far away?

Distant mountain peaks give the feeling of a God who is distant.
Why does God feel farther than the farthest mountain peak?

Sometimes as this mountain range photo depicts, God seems farther than the top of the highest peak and even further than the furthest galaxy in the universe.

But that’s not the whole story.

People for thousands of years have asked the same question we ask today…where are you God? He truly is closer than you can think or imagine. It just takes a little different perspective.

Did you realize that God is holding all things together?

He is the God-particle that exists in everything, the quark particle which physicists can’t explain.

This same particle is necessary to keep us grounded and held together. So perhaps, God is closer to us than we’ve known.

Believe God

We must take God at His word. We must believe what He tells us or attempt to believe what He says in His word, even if we can’t fully understand it … yet.

God desires to make Himself known to you and to me. He desires fellowship with His children.

Consider old and new testament passage of Scripture.

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.

Psalm 19:1-4

The psalmist tells us that creation is shouting even without speech to anyone who will listen.

You are an ‘anyone.’ I am an ‘anyone.’

Creation’s voice extends to the ends of the earth and into the unknown galaxies. And creation is shouting to us about the existence of a God who loves to create and desires to be involved with His creation.

Are we listening?

Are we curious?

Are we responding?

Paul, in referring to the Greeks’ altar to the unknown God, states, “the God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. And He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward Him and find Him. Yet He is actually not far from each one of us, for in Him we live and move and have our being.”

Acts 17:24-28

Paul reminds us that God doesn’t need us to do anything for Him.

And amazingly, even though we are far below His station, He still invites us to fellowship with Him. You and I get to connect with the God of the universe, Who is holding all things together.

The Lord has precisely determined both the when in history and the where of our existence so that we would be able to find Him.

We have the opportunity to seek God and feel our way toward Him…but He is actually closer than we can imagine.

How to Connect Today

Would you like to connect with the Lord today? Consider these steps from the Scriptures above.

Ask what is the Lord saying to me, today or right now, in His word, in creation or in circumstances?

Be curious about what you read, what you see, what you hear.

Listen for His still, small voice in creation.

Listen for those random thoughts and feelings that come to you and consider they could be the Lord’s invitation for fellowship.

Ponder Creation with the Lord today.

Go into creation and ponder what is being revealed or spoken. Here are some thoughts to get you started:

  • Is the sky filled with fluffy clouds or streaked with the colors of sunset.
  • Is the sun breaking forth on the horizon bringing forth a new day?
  • Feel the grass under your feet, or perhaps the sand.
  • This is your allotment for today; you are grounded.
  • Listen for the birds of the sky or perhaps it’s the crickets and cicadas.
  • What do you smell in the air?
  • Can you smell jasmine from the hedge or the scent of rain in the air?
  • Take in all that you experience in creation and be reminded that the Lord is sustaining everything, including you.

Do you sense the Lord wanting to remind you of anything? Is He extending an invitation to you?

Perhaps He is revealing that just as His creation expresses His beauty, you also are beautiful in His eyes.

Or maybe you needed to be reminded that just as the Lord provides for the birds of the air, scurrying land animals and all the other critters, He will also provide for your needs in His perfect way.

Enjoy the Journey of Connecting

So, breathe in what you sense the Lord revealing to you in His creation; breathe in His presence.

If you journal, write down what you sense Him saying to you. You can begin with the phrase, “Dear One” or “Dearest Daughter” or “My Warrior.”

If you don’t currently journal, I encourage you to get a composition notebook or spiral bound notebook, or even a pretty journal.

Commit to connecting with the Lord each day, even if it’s just for a few moments. Read Scripture, even just one verse as simple as “Jesus wept.” (John 11:35) See what the Lord might speak about as you ponder His Word and His nearness.

Life is short; reach out to the Lord while He is making Himself known to you.

Don’t miss the opportunity of experiencing His presence when you need a friend to listen.
