Reading Time: 2 minutes

We’ve all faced it, that nagging feeling when I am afraid⏤the feeling of helplessness and overwhelm.

We all find ourselves in situations that will cause us to be fearful.

Maybe for some, it’s the concern about a loved one, either a child or a parent. For others, meeting financial obligations has caused fear and worry.

Have you sensed darkness seeping into your situation, your heart or your mind?

Often the darkness grips our minds and hearts and holds us captive in a chokehold that feels constricting and seems to get tighter and tighter with time.

When I am afraid, Who can I turn to?

What, or rather Who, can we turn to in these moments to gain our peace, our sanity, our stability?

David, the Shepherd-King, faced his own fears and penned some timeless words for himself and us.

The Lord is my light and my salvation … The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger … I will remain confident.

Psalm 27:1 NLT

The Lord’s light can break through the darkness of fear and worry the enemy attempts to cover me with.

When I am afraid, I can trust that
the Lord is my light and my salvation Psalm 27:1
The Lord’s light breaks through the darkness the enemy attempts to impose.

Darkness can’t hide the light. Just a single flicker of a small candle can completely dispel the darkness.

Allow the Lord’s light to shine into your situation. Make the effort to fan that flame so it is brighter.

How can you fan the the Lord’s flame?

Remind yourself that the Lord’s salvation has already defeated the enemy completely. The enemy can’t restrict the Lord’s activity in our lives. You’re safe and secure in the shelter of the Lord’s fortress.

Speak words of truth to yourself. Remind yourself of all the Lord’s promises. His mercies are new every morning.

Rest in the assurance that the Lord loves you and is for you. He will never forget you or leave you.

Prayer: Lord, I’m feeling defeated and alone. Help me remember that You are my light and salvation, my fortress, protecting me from the fiery darts the enemy throws at me. Show me reminders of how you are displaying Your light in the dark situations I’m encountering. Help me recognize the ways you are revealing Your presence right now. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
