The Melody of Life (Play Skillfully on the Strings, Psalm 33)

Reading Time: 3 minutes

You are on this earth for a reason.

You were born for a purpose. You’ve heard it before.

Have you thought about your life’s purpose? What are you investing your life in today? Are you playing your one life melody or just discordant noise?

Pause and consider that you have one life to live. Play your life melody to the best of your ability.

Sing to the Lord a new song; play skillfully on the strings.

Psalm 33:3

Leftovers and Litter?

Recently, I read Psalm 33. I paused when I read play skillfully.  Why would the psalmist make this declaration?  And then I realized that sometimes I am guilty of giving the Lord the leftovers of my day. Leftovers can be construed as even litter or scraps of time.

The Lord is worthy of so much more than the leftovers or the litter of my days. Leftovers, when left unattended, will ultimately become my life, if I’m not mindful. Is this what we want our life’s melody to be?

Maybe it’s just me, or perhaps you also struggle with careless neglect of your life’s story.

We need to ensure we avoid giving the Lord our leftovers by day and by life. If we are not attentive, we risk arriving at the end of our lives regretting lost time and lost opportunities to embrace our lives most fully.

Intentionality

When we play skillfully at life, we are not just making noise.

No, we are intentional and thoughtful as to our next steps on our journey, or at least we may tell ourselves this.  Is our heart deceiving us?

Are we truly approaching life with intentionality?  Or are we allowing the distractions in this world to cause us to be scattered in our thinking and actions, without really accomplishing anything of true value.

Preparation & Practice

If we want to bring glory to the Lord and do so with intentionality, wouldn’t we play our life’s instruments with all the skill we can muster?

Think of performing any activity before a live audience.  Perhaps you are a pianist, an orator, a baseball player or engage in some other type of profession or even hobby before an audience.  Would you or I go into such a scenario without being fully prepared, or at least to the best of our ability?

Reflect on your time with the Lord.

Do you and I enter into His presence with a ‘leftovers attitude’ or does He receive the same purposeful devotion that we would make for complete strangers in an auditorium or on the playing field?

Remember, the Lord is the only audience that truly matters.

Play Your Instrument of Life Skillfully

Now consider your one life is the instrument you are playing.

We are each an instrument with voice and percussion which can be used just to make noise or a beautiful melody.

By God’s grace, He provides us wisdom and skill when we seek Him.

As we live our life filled with God’s grace, we can bring harmony into this a world filled with disagreement and division.

Let’s choose to play our life’s instruments with all the skill we can muster in honor of our Creator.

Choose to play your instrument of life; don’t allow the talent to be wasted or hidden away.

  • Live utterly into your one life.
  • Play every note.
  • Leave nothing behind.

Offer your own life melody to the world.

No one else can play your melody.

You were created with a melody that is needed by the world. Don’t let your fears or doubts keep you from fully expressing your life and its beautiful melody.

You are the instrument; your life is the melody.  Play skillfully on the strings.
